What Is Dried Longan?

Dried Longan (Long Yan Rou, 龍眼肉) — meaning "Dragon Eye Flesh" — is the dried, sweet aril of the longan fruit, one of the most beloved tonic foods in Chinese herbal medicine. Its rich, intensely sweet flavour and concentrated nutritional profile make it a uniquely nourishing ingredient — at once a delicious food and a potent medicinal herb.

Sweet and warm in nature, Dried Longan enters the Heart and Spleen channels. It tonifies and nourishes Heart Blood and Spleen Qi simultaneously — a combination that makes it invaluable for patterns of Heart-Spleen deficiency: anxiety, palpitations, poor sleep, fatigue, pale complexion, and poor memory. Unlike some warming tonics, Dried Longan's gentle warmth makes it suitable for most constitutions when used in appropriate amounts.

History & Origin

Longan (Long Yan, also Gui Yuan) is a sweet, warming fruit treasured for over two thousand years for nourishing the Heart and Blood and calming the spirit.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)
Recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing; valued for tonifying and calming the spirit.
Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE)
Prized as a tribute fruit and used to nourish Blood and calm the spirit for palpitations and poor sleep.
Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE)
Incorporated into tonic formulas for Heart-and-Spleen deficiency.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Featured in the famous Gui Pi Tang to tonify the Spleen and nourish Heart Blood; Bencao Gangmu praised its calming, tonifying nature.
Modern Era
Polysaccharides and polyphenols are studied for antioxidant, immune, and calming effects.
